Term 3 Summary

In English this term, we will be learning to develop lots of different writing skills. We will be learning to write persuasive letters, interview scripts and diaries. There will also be opportunities to take part in a debate, create some artwork and for the children to make predictions about what they think will happen and why. All these activities will be based on a book, but the title must remain a mystery for now!

In Maths, as usual, we will be covering a range of different topics. This term, we will be working on multiplication, division, money and statistics. As well as this, all of the children are still working very hard on their arithmetic skills, and 2 minute tables. 

This term, the children are doing a History unit based on the key question ‘Why did the Romans settle in Britain?’. Each lesson, we will focus on a different key question, to eventually be able to answer this question. Our other key questions throughout the term will be:

  • What was it like to live in Ancient Rome?
  • Why did the Romans invade and settle in Britain?  
  • How did Britons respond to the Roman invasion?
  • Why was the Roman army so successful? 
  • What do artefacts suggest about the lives of Roman soldiers in Britain?
  • What was the legacy of the Roman Empire in Britain?


We will end the term with a trip to Caerleon where we will take part in a workshop, explore the museum and visit various Roman sites.

This term in Science we will be looking at rocks and soil, with a focus on learning about different types of rocks, how fossils are formed, soil formation and carrying out various interesting investigations. 

In Art we will be finding out all about the sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The children will investigate some of her sculptures and have the opportunity to create their own sculptures in 3 different mediums.

In French we will be studying a unit called ‘Les animaux’ where we will use games, puzzles, speaking and written  activities to learn 10 animal names.

In our Indoor PE we will be doing some dance inspired by the Roman army.

In Computing this term we will be looking at the Be Internet Legends pillar Be Secure. This is where the children will learn how to protect their personal information. We will also be learning how to collect data and put this into a spreadsheet to create a graph.

In Religion and Worldviews, we will be learning about the following big questions:

  • Where do our morals come from?
  • What happens if we do wrong?


PSHE: Y3 Safety and the changing body

Year 3 will learn about cyberbullying and how to be good digital citizens. They will be taught about first aid, bites and stings and how to be safe near roads. Pupils also think about choices and influence.

Term 2 Summary

This term, the children are doing their first Year 3 Geography unit and the question this term is ‘Why do people live near volcanoes?. Each lesson, we will focus on a different key question, to eventually be able to answer this question. Our other key questions throughout the term will be:

  • How is the Earth constructed? 
  • Where are mountains found? 
  • Why and where do we get volcanoes? 
  • What are the effects of volcanic eruption? 
  • What are earthquakes and where do we get them?
  • Where have the rocks around school come from? 

 

This term in Science we will be looking at forces and magnets, with a focus on friction and investigating the strength of magnets and how they are used in the real world.

We will start the term by learning how to write a set of instructions which links to our DT project of making packaging for chocolate truffles that will be made by following a simple recipe.  

In Art we will be learning to join clay so that we can make and decorate our own coil pots. 

In PE we will be learning some net games skills and the Enrichment team will be teaching gymnastics. 

In Computing, we will be learning how to create a presentation – developing our word processing skills.

In PSHE we will be exploring the topic of Health and Wellbeing. We will cover the following areas:

  • My healthy diary
  • Relaxation: stretches
  • Wonderful me
  • My superpowers
  • Resilience: breaking down barriers
  • Communicating my feelings
  • Diet and dental health

Term 1 Summary

Welcome to Year 3! To start the first term, we will be focusing on the whole school learning skills and learning a bit about our class countries – Class Italy and Class Canada.

Our History is all about: Would you prefer to live in the Stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age? 

The key questions we will be investigating are: 

  • How long ago did Prehistoric man live? 
  • What does Skara Brae tell us about life in the Stone Age? 
  • Who was this Bronze Age man? 
  • What was the impact of bronze in Prehistoric Britain? 
  • How did trade change lives in the Iron Age? 
  • What changed between the Stone Age and the Iron Age? 

Our Science is all about: Movement and nutrition. This will include learning about skeletons, muscles and balanced diets alongside developing scientific skills such as sorting, comparing and questioning data. 

Also in Art this term we will be looking at water colour painting and looking at the artist Paul Klee. 

We will start our first unit, J’Appends le Francais (I’m learning French) in French

In PE, we will be learning some disco dance moves and playing some invasion games. 

In RSE and PSHE we will be discussing family and relationships by exploring the following areas:

  • Healthy families
  • Friendship conflict versus bullying
  • Effective communication
  • Learning who to trust
  • Respecting differences in others
  • Stereotyping: Gender and age

This term we will be exploring the question ‘What makes us human?’ in Religion & Worldviews. This will include interpreting and using art to express beliefs about spirituality, inner self and the soul.

Term 1 will have our first visit to Hortham Farm for some exciting forest school sessions.
