Term 4 Summary

We cannot wait to share with you all the wonderful learning we will be doing in Term 4!

In our English learning this term, we are looking at a story called ‘Man on the Moon’. It looks at a day in the life of a man called Bob, who loves to look after and tidy up the moon! What he doesn’t know about the moon is there are some sneaky green creatures hiding everywhere! We will also be writing up some learning related to our exciting trip to Aerospace Bristol.

In Maths we will be learning about fractions specifically looking at thirds and quarters. We will then move onto measuring mass and capacity.

This term, the children are focusing on a new History unit and the question this term is ‘How did we learn to fly?’. Each lesson, we will focus on a different key question, to eventually be able to answer this question. Our other key questions throughout the term will be:

  • Who were the Wright brothers?
  • When was the first flight?
  • Why was Bessie Coleman significant?
  • Why is Amelia Earhart significant?
  • Why was the Moon landing special?
  • How did we learn to fly?

As well as this, we are very excited to take a school trip to Aerospace Bristol this term, where the children will get to go on Concorde, complete a workshop all about local Filton Aero Heroes and discover why Concorde is so special to our local history.

This term in Science, we will be learning about all about the life cycles and health of animals. The children will be exploring the life cycles of different animals, including humans, and learning about the basic things all animals need to survive. They’ll also be finding out how to take care of their own personal hygiene, understanding the positive effects of exercise, and identifying foods from different food groups. In their scientific work, the children will be developing key skills such as measuring with simple equipment, recording results in tables, using data to answer questions, and carrying out research using secondary sources.

This term in PSHE, the children will be learning about what makes a positive school environment and why different rules apply in different situations. They’ll explore the roles and responsibilities everyone has in keeping our school a safe and welcoming place, as well as finding out about the people who help care for our local area and wider community. The children will learn to recognise and respect similarities and differences between people, understand how the school council works, and practise sharing their own opinions on the things that matter to them.

In PE we will be developing our dance and Games Skills.

Next, in Computing we will be learning how to be safe online, by learning all about being kind to each other online, in the same way we are in person!

Finally, in DT we will be planning, constructing and evaluating our own moving vehicles!

Term 3 Summary

Year 2 has some brilliant learning to look forward to in Term 3, as well as doing our class assembly.

In our English learning this term, we will be starting off the term by looking at How to catch a star written by Oliver Jeffers. It is a fantastic story to help us write explanation texts. Then, we will be completing some shape poetry, and finally writing a newspaper report describing our enterprise event!

In Maths we will be learning about multiplication and division. The children will be working on sharing, grouping and becoming confident with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

This term, the children are doing Geography and the question this term is ‘Why is our world wonderful?’. Each lesson, we will focus on a different key question, to eventually be able to answer this question. Our other key questions throughout the term will be:

  • What are some of the UK’s amazing features and landmarks?
  • Where are some of the world’s most amazing places?
  • Where are our oceans?
  • What is amazing about our local area?
  • Why are natural habitats special?
  • How can we look after natural habitats?

For our Science, we are looking at Uses of Everyday Materials.  We will name different materials, recognise that stretching, twisting, bending and squashing can change solid objects to a new shape. We will also be working on our ‘working scientifically skills’ through recording data and using the data to answer simple questions.

In PE we will be developing our Dance and Skipping skills. In Computing we will be learning how to be secure online and how to handle data on a device.

We will also be looking at Art this term, where we will study the artist Edward Tingatinga, and put our painting skills to the test.

PSHE: Y2 Safety and the changing body

Children will be developing understanding of safety: roads, medicines and an introduction to online safety; distinguishing secrets from surprises; naming body parts and looking at the concept of privacy. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Term 2 Summary

In Term 2, Year 2 have some excellent learning to look forward to!

  • Would you have preferred to go to school in the past?

Last term in Science, we learnt about habitats. This term we are extending our learning to look at microhabitats! We will classify minibeasts, study different microhabitats and also plan and complete a scientific woodlice experiment.

We will also be doing DT this term, where we will be learning about and then making pizzas!

This term we will also be doing PSHE learning about ‘Health and wellbeing’. In PE we will be developing our dance and games skills. Finally, in Computing we will be learning how to be alert online, recognising what’s safe and what isn’t, whilst also continuing to improve our information technology skills! The children will also have coding lessons each Tuesday in enrichment led by the Computer Explorers team.
