At Bailey’s Court Primary School, our aim is to provide all children with access to high-quality, engaging, and inclusive music education. Using the Sing Up Music scheme, which aligns with the National Curriculum for Music and the Model Music Curriculum, we are committed to developing every child’s musical knowledge, skills, and confidence. We believe that music is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum and plays a key role in nurturing creativity, self-expression, and wellbeing.
We want every pupil to leave our school with a secure foundation in music, whether they choose to pursue it further or simply carry a lifelong appreciation and love for it. Our curriculum exposes children to a wide range of musical styles, traditions, and cultures, using authentic materials to foster understanding and enjoyment.
Recognising the importance of skilled teaching in music, we have a specialist music teacher who delivers high-quality lessons across the school. This ensures consistency, expertise, and progression in learning across all key stages.
Music at Bailey’s Court is taught from Reception to Year 6, following the progressive Sing Up Music scheme. Lessons are carefully timed to match children’s developmental stages. These sessions are designed to be practical and engaging, covering the core strands of singing, performing, composing, and listening.
Additionally, to enrich the musical offer, we embed music into wider school life through:
A school choir that performs in the local community, building pupils’ confidence, performance skills, and a sense of belonging.
Rocksteady Music School sessions, where children form bands and provide in-school performances to the rest of the school.
Instrumental tuition available for interested pupils, including violin, keyboard, guitar and other instruments, delivered by specialist music teachers.
These wider opportunities ensure that children experience music both as a structured subject and as a creative outlet beyond the classroom.
The impact of music education at Bailey’s Court is evident in our pupils’ enthusiasm, musical development, and confidence in performance. Through our specialist-led curriculum and rich extracurricular offer, children make sustained progress in their understanding and enjoyment of music.
Each year group undertakes three Progression Snapshots. These include video recordings and practical assessments that allow the Music Leads to monitor progression and support continuous improvement.
Beyond academic outcomes, music at Bailey’s Court builds teamwork, resilience, and self-expression. Whether performing in the choir, participating in band sessions, or learning an instrument, pupils develop personal confidence and a strong musical identity. Ultimately, our aim is for children to leave Bailey’s Court with positive musical experiences, strong foundational skills, and a love of music.
